Location and arrival

The resort sits at the end of District Road D119, beneath the sandstone cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg. The final drive is scenic, although parts can feel steep and winding. Arriving during daylight makes the route easier.

This is an intentionally quiet mountain stay. Mobile coverage and internet access can be unreliable. That suits a retreat, but guests who must work online should plan accordingly.

Rooms and mountain views

Rooms range from standard accommodation to superior suites. The room visited felt comfortable and suited the natural setting. A large bed, mosquito net, fireplace and private terrace added character.

Selected rooms look directly towards the mountains. The outlook was one of the strongest parts of the stay. Layouts and views vary, so confirm the room category when booking.

Full board dining

Current rates include breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus morning and afternoon tea. Picnic lunches can be requested for days spent hiking. The original visit included hearty meals and a scenic restaurant outlook.

Dinner during the stay included a fillet with roast potato and vegetables as part of a three course service. The food felt generous and well suited to an active mountain break.

Activities and guided walks

The resort offers two guided hikes each day. Other published activities include horse trails, mountain biking, fishing, tennis, lawn bowls, canoeing and swimming. Families can also use pony rides, a playground and indoor games.

Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Pack layers, sun protection and suitable walking shoes. Some activities depend on conditions or require an extra charge.

Spa and leisure

The Forest Retreat offers massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. It also includes a forest sauna and forest bathing experiences. Published hours are 9am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 2pm on Sunday.

The outdoor pool is not heated. Guests also have access to tennis and quiet indoor lounges.

Rates and value

The published 2026 tariff is valid until 10 December 2026. Standard rooms start at R2,140 per person per day when sharing. Superior rooms start at R2,700, while superior suites start at R3,090.

Single rates are higher. The package can offer solid value because accommodation, three daily meals, teas, guided walks and many activities are included. Always check the current official tariff before booking.
