Review of Onigilly – Highlights
- Another one of Anthony Bourdin’s choices just like In-and-Out, this restaurant offers gourmet Japanese rice balls along side other delicious sides. If you are familiar with other premium quick service concepts you will immediately get the just of Onigilly. There are a few set menu options where you can get 2 rice balls (with your choice of filling) and a side such as a soup.
- This restaurant is super simple with tons of filling options from vegetarian like hijiki (braised seaweed, carrot and tofu), shiitake (soy braised mushroom) or natto (fermented soybeans mixed with tamari). There are also seafood fillings such as spicy shrimp, unagi (broiled fresh water eel) and snow crab. As well as meat options such as sonorous (ginger ground beef), spicy bacon and spicy miso beef! All sandwiched between two compacted triangles of rice held together with a thin seaweed wrapper.
- Each rice ball is made to order and they use robots to help them speed up the assembly and provide consistency.
Review of Onigilly – Things to Note
- The meals are best enjoyed in person, fresh at the restaurant, though currently during Covid the outlets are only open for takeaway or online ordering. Onigilly offers catering as well.
- A single rice ball costs from 2.5 USD to 3.75 USD with an average order costing around 10-13 USD.
Review of Onigilly – Tips
- Take 3 as your rule of thumb for lunch and we enjoyed the seafood fillings the most – I guess that is fitting as sushi is normally rice and fish!
