Tri Rail links Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach County by commuter train. It can be a practical alternative to driving, especially when airport traffic or parking costs are a concern.

This Tri Rail review is based on a northbound journey from Miami Airport Station to Fort Lauderdale. It covers the route, current ticket prices, airport connections and the onboard experience. It also explains what first time passengers should know before travelling.

Fare and service information was checked in October 2026. Always confirm the live timetable before departure.

Tri Rail at a Glance

Service area: Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties

Main route: Miami Airport to Mangonia Park

Weekday branch: MiamiCentral via Metrorail Transfer

Tickets: Station ticket machines, selected staffed kiosks and supported mobile ticketing

Airport links: Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport

Best for: Airport transfers, regional journeys and travellers who want to avoid driving

Tri Rail Route and Stations

The core line runs north from Miami Airport to Mangonia Park. It serves 18 stations across the three South Florida counties.

Key stops include Hialeah Market, Metrorail Transfer, Opa locka, Golden Glades, Hollywood and Sheridan Street. The line then reaches Fort Lauderdale Airport, Fort Lauderdale and Cypress Creek. Farther north, it serves Pompano Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach and Mangonia Park.

Weekday timetables also show MiamiCentral as a nineteenth station. Most passengers for MiamiCentral must change at Metrorail Transfer. The X301 and X302 express trains are the exceptions. Weekend and holiday trains normally use Miami Airport as the southern end of the route.

The route is designed for regional travel rather than city centre sightseeing. Some stations sit beside major roads and rely on local buses or shuttles for the final part of the journey. Check the exact station location before choosing your stop.

Miami Airport to Fort Lauderdale Experience

Signs inside Miami International Airport direct passengers towards Tri Rail and other public transport. The free MIA Mover connects the airport terminal area with the Miami Intermodal Center. Tri Rail trains leave from Miami Airport Station there.

The northbound platform was clearly marked during this visit. The train was a blue double deck unit with a functional commuter layout. Inside, the car had fixed blue seats, several facing seats and tables by the windows.

Power outlets were available beside at least one table. A route map above the seats made the stop order easy to follow. WiFi was also advertised inside the car.

The journey provides a broad view of South Florida beyond the main tourist districts. Stops such as Opa locka show how the service connects local communities as well as airports and larger cities.

Tickets and Where to Buy Them

Buy and validate a ticket before boarding. Ticket vending machines are available at all Tri Rail stations during operating hours. Machines at Miami Airport, Fort Lauderdale and MiamiCentral accept cash, debit cards and major credit cards.

Selected stations also have staffed ticket kiosks. Opening hours are limited, especially at weekends and on public holidays. The ticket machines are therefore the most dependable option.

Tri Rail also supports mobile fare payment. The SoFloGO app combines regional trip planning and fare payment across participating South Florida transport systems. Allow time to create an account or understand the ticket process before the train arrives.

Keep the ticket or loaded EASY Card until the journey is complete. Fare inspections can take place onboard.

Tri Rail Fares and Prices

Tri Rail uses a zone based fare system. The fare depends on how many zones the journey crosses. The following regular fares took effect on 1 October 2026.

Zones

One way

Round trip

12 trip pass

1 zone

$3

$6

$36

2 zones

$4

$8

$48

3 zones

$6

$12

$72

4 zones

$7

$14

$84

5 zones

$8

$16

$96

6 zones

$10

$20

$120

The regular monthly pass costs $121. The regional monthly pass, which includes participating connecting transit, costs $165. A regular weekend or holiday day pass costs $5.

Half price fares remain available for eligible children aged 5 to 12, students, seniors aged 65 and over, people with disabilities and Medicare recipients. Proof of eligibility or a registered discount EASY Card may be required. Children under five ride free.

Use the official Tri Rail fare calculator for an exact journey price. Fares and eligibility rules can change.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale Airport Connections

Miami International Airport: Miami Airport Station is part of the Miami Intermodal Center. Follow terminal signs to the MIA Mover on level three. The short automated ride connects the terminal area with the transport hub.

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport: The rail station is in Dania Beach, not inside an airport terminal. A complimentary shuttle links the station with FLL during train operating hours. Tri Rail states that it runs about every 15 to 20 minutes.

Do not confuse Fort Lauderdale Station with Fort Lauderdale Airport Station. They are separate stops. Fort Lauderdale Station is better for parts of the city, while the airport station serves FLL and Dania Beach.

Onboard Comfort and Facilities

The interior used on this journey felt more practical than polished. Seating was arranged for both individuals and small groups. Tables made the train useful for working, eating or organising travel documents.

The double deck layout adds capacity, though stairs may be inconvenient with large luggage. Choose a seat on the entrance level if climbing is difficult. Keep bags clear of aisles and door areas.

Power access is helpful on a regional journey, but outlet availability can vary by car and seat. Charge devices before travel rather than relying on finding one.

What We Liked

The route connects three counties without requiring a car.

Miami Airport access is clearly signed from the terminal.

Airport, Metrorail, bus and local shuttle connections expand the route.

Tables and power outlets can make longer trips more useful.

The weekend day pass offers simple pricing for longer journeys.

Things to Note

Service is less frequent than an urban metro, especially at weekends.

Tri Rail recommends arriving 20 minutes before departure.

Northbound trains normally use Track 2 and southbound trains use Track 1, unless announced otherwise.

MiamiCentral service is mainly a weekday option and often requires a change.

Some stations need a bus, shuttle or taxi for the final connection.

Airport travellers should leave extra time for the MIA Mover or FLL shuttle.

Practical Tips Before You Travel

Check the live timetable and train tracker on the official Tri Rail website.

Confirm whether you need Miami Airport, MiamiCentral, Fort Lauderdale or Fort Lauderdale Airport.

Use the fare calculator to check how many zones your trip crosses.

Buy the ticket before boarding and keep it available for inspection.

Arrive early because trains do not wait for late passengers.

Review the final bus or shuttle connection before leaving.

For another regional rail perspective, see our Trenitalia Intercity review. Travellers comparing other ground transport can also read our Hampton Jitney experience and Cannes to Nice Airport bus guide.

Is Tri Rail Good Value?

Tri Rail offers strong value when the route matches the journey. It can avoid motorway traffic, parking charges and one way car rental costs. The $5 weekend day pass is especially attractive for longer trips.

Value is weaker when a station is far from the final destination. Add the cost and time of any connecting bus, shuttle or taxi before deciding. A direct ride share may be simpler for a group with several bags.

Tri Rail Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tri Rail go directly to Miami International Airport?

Tri Rail serves Miami Airport Station at the Miami Intermodal Center. The free MIA Mover links the airport terminal area with the station.

Does Tri Rail go to Fort Lauderdale Airport?

Yes. Use Fort Lauderdale Airport Station at Dania Beach. A complimentary shuttle connects the station with the airport terminals during train operating hours.

How much does Tri Rail cost?

Regular one way fares range from $3 to $10, depending on zones. A regular weekend or holiday day pass costs $5. These prices took effect on 1 October 2026.

Can tickets be bought at the station?

Yes. Ticket machines are available at all stations. They accept cash, debit cards and major credit cards. Selected stations also have staffed kiosks.

Does Tri Rail serve Downtown Miami?

Weekday trains serve MiamiCentral. Most journeys require a change at Metrorail Transfer, except the X301 and X302 express services. Weekend trains normally end at Miami Airport.

Is Tri Rail useful with luggage?

It can be, especially for airport travel. However, double deck trains include stairs and airport links add a transfer. Allow extra time and keep luggage manageable.

The Brief Review Verdict

Tri Rail is a useful and affordable way to travel across South Florida when its stations fit the trip. The airport links, clear route map and zone based fares make it accessible to visitors as well as commuters.

The main compromise is frequency. Final connections can also add time. Plan the complete journey before leaving, arrive early and check live service information. With those steps, Tri Rail is a credible alternative to driving between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach County.
