It’s described as a farm to table izakaya, but that label doesn’t fully capture it. What pulls people back isn’t just the cooking it’s the atmosphere. There’s a certain “pixie dust” energy here that occasionally turns dinner into an event.

Led by chefs Travis Lett and Ian Robinson, RVR reflects a California to Japan conversation: listening bar culture, vinyl stacked behind the bar, precise small plates, highballs and sake flowing easily, and a deep respect for ingredients.

RVR succeeds because it checks more than just the “excellent cooking” box. It hits comfort, creativity, cool, and community all at once. The dishes are technically strong, but the larger appeal lies in how it makes you feel. It’s the kind of place you bring friends because you want them to experience it.

That rare balance serious food without seriousness of tone is what keeps RVR on repeat.

KUMO Review – Highlights

Soufflé Pancakes: Their signature dish thick, jiggly stacks that are soft and airy inside, delicately golden outside. Not overly sweet. Comes with seasonal toppings, matcha or classic syrup, and a dollop of chantilly.

Warabi Mochi: A rare find done exceptionally well. Silky, chewy, and coated in roasted kinako soybean flour. Served chilled with a side of black sugar syrup (kuromitsu) a subtle, grown-up dessert.

Minimalist Design: White walls, clean lines, delicate plating, and a Japanese sense of restraint. Everything feels deliberate from the portion size to the calm ambiance.

Seasonal Specials: Rotating flavors and occasional collabs keep the experience fresh. Expect yuzu, sakura, or black sesame to pop up on the menu.

Tea Pairings: A tight selection of high-quality Japanese teas think genmaicha, hojicha, and matcha that balance the desserts without overpowering them.

Review of KUMO Restaurant Wasl – Things to Note

Light but Rich: Don’t expect overly sugary or heavy Western-style desserts KUMO leans subtle and elegant.

Limited Seating: Some locations are small and fill up fast, especially on weekends.

Presentation Matters: Desserts are plated like artwork give them the 3-minute photo shoot they deserve before digging in.

A Bit Pricey: It’s not cheap, but quality, sourcing, and technique justify the spend if you’re into Japanese patisserie.

Review of KUMO – Tips

Classic Soufflé Pancakes: The perfect entry point airy, sweet, and just enough texture to be satisfying.

Warabi Mochi with Matcha Tea: A refined, not-too-sweet combo. Best enjoyed slowly.

Seasonal Limited Edition Flavors: If you see black sesame or yuzu, don’t think twice.

It’s got heart, heat, and high standards. While the setting is relaxed, the food is anything but ordinary—flavors are bold, clean, and layered with thought. It’s a place you return to not because it’s flashy, but because it just gets it right.

Review of Daikan – Details

Address: Cluster Y – Jumeirah Lake Towers – Dubai (Google pin)
Tel: +971 4 876 8477
Website: Daikan Ramen Bar

Daikan Review – Highlights

The original is located in Cluster Y in JLT right above Maiz Tacos, another loved homegrown UAE brand. The brand has since expanded and opened two more outlets: one in Gate Avenue DIFC and another in Nakheel Mall on the Palm.

Daikan ramen bar is small and homey atmosphere with r&b music playing while you browse the menu via QR codes on the tables and watch the team cooking up magic in the open kitchen.

There are a variety of starters, called ‘bites’ such as gyoza, miso aubergine, chicken katsu and karaage, as well as, bao buns and donburi. The highlight of Daikan is their chicken or veggie broth ramen bowls. There are 5 to choose from with a variety of bases such as salt, soy sauce, miso, spicy miso and sesame.

The first sip of your ramen is like a warm cozy familiar feeling like sipping a hug. It makes you want to jump on a plane to Japan and explore more of what the country has to offer. These ramen bowls are served quickly and generously what a large portion of noodles that you chow down on with the chopsticks provided on each table as well as your large wooden ladle.

Review of Daikan Restaurant – Things to Note

Mosquitoes and little bugs can be a nuisance when enjoying your food, so best to sit near or in the current of air conditioning units.

The restaurant is small and gets quite busy from 7:30pm onwards, so come early or order on chatfood direct from the restaurant to experience from the comfort of your home. Likewise the restaurant team get quite busy fulfilling and packing all the orders that come during this period as well.

Parking can be tough as there are limited spots in the JLT clusters however try another cluster and walk over, the scenary in JLT is quite nice. Otherwise check out their Palm location in Nakheel Mall which has plenty of indoor parking.

Review of Daikan – Tips

Save space for dessert as the matcha ice cream is super refreshing and soothing after a spicy ramen bowl.

Like Chipotle but for Japanese rice balls. Quick, efficient, high quality – the perfect lunch snack!

Review of Onigilly – Details

Address: multiple locations (click here for list)
Tel: +1 650 313 2104
Website: Onigilly Restaurant

Review of Onigilly – Highlights

Another one of Anthony Bourdin’s choices just like In-and-Out, this restaurant offers gourmet Japanese rice balls along side other delicious sides. If you are familiar with other premium quick service concepts you will immediately get the just of Onigilly. There are a few set menu options where you can get 2 rice balls (with your choice of filling) and a side such as a soup.

This restaurant is super simple with tons of filling options from vegetarian like hijiki (braised seaweed, carrot and tofu), shiitake (soy braised mushroom) or natto (fermented soybeans mixed with tamari). There are also seafood fillings such as spicy shrimp, unagi (broiled fresh water eel) and snow crab. As well as meat options such as sonorous (ginger ground beef), spicy bacon and spicy miso beef! All sandwiched between two compacted triangles of rice held together with a thin seaweed wrapper.

Each rice ball is made to order and they use robots to help them speed up the assembly and provide consistency.

Review of Onigilly – Things to Note

The meals are best enjoyed in person, fresh at the restaurant, though currently during Covid the outlets are only open for takeaway or online ordering. Onigilly offers catering as well.

A single rice ball costs from 2.5 USD to 3.75 USD with an average order costing around 10-13 USD.

Review of Onigilly – Tips

Take 3 as your rule of thumb for lunch and we enjoyed the seafood fillings the most – I guess that is fitting as sushi is normally rice and fish!

The full menu can be seen here.

The restaurant has outdoor seating with views over the Jumeirah Harbour as well as indoor seating with traditional floor mats for a Japanese experience. It takes a little getting used to but is similar to the Arabic seating style as well, which suits the location as you get heritage of Dubai from the location, inside this modern venue.

For the full menu, please click here.

The restaurant has Arabic influences in the menu, catering to local taste buds. Origami is owned by the same team behind Moon Slice Pizza in Jumeirah.

Review of Origami Sushi – Things to Note

There is no alcohol served at the restaurant.

The prices are on the higher end compared to similar offerings in Dubai.

Review of Origami Sushi – Tips

Sit indoors at the Japanese style seating.

The restaurant gets very busy during weekends and evenings so come early or call ahead to make a reservation.

Save space for dessert, as the Mochi (round buns of soft and chewy rice) filled with ice cream are worth the wait, especially the unique flavors such as cheesecake.

Review of Time Out Market Dubai – Details

Address: Downtown, Souk Al Bahar – Downtown Dubai – Dubai (Google pin)
Website: Time Out Market Dubai

Review of Time Out Market Dubai – Video Tour

For a video walk through of the new Time Out Market in Dubai, please see the video below:

Review of Time Out Market Dubai – Highlights

The market is spread across 43,000 square feet and has 17 restaurants and 3 bars located inside Souk al Bahar adjacent to Dubai Mall.

The restaurants as of April 2021 are Folly Workshop (British), Masti (Indian), Fulvio’s (Italian), Reif (Japanese), Local Fire by Mattar Farm (barbecue), Pickl (fried chicken), Pit Fire Pizza (pizza), Night Jar (coffee and dessert), Brix (dessert), Scoopi (dessert), Al Fanar (Emirati), Liban by Allo Beirut (Lebanese), Little Erth (vegan), Two Leaves by Project Chaiwala (coffee and tea), BB Social Dining (Asian), Vietnamese Foodies (Vietnamese), and Long Teng (Chinese). Reviews for each linked.

Originally the concept was launched in Lisbon, Portugal and has been an international hit opening locations across the world in cities like London and New York. This market brings the best the city has to offer in a central location where you can test and taste bites from different restaurants all in one location.

Review of Time Out Market Dubai – Things to Note

Due to Covid capacity limitations there can be a queue outside where you have to wait 10-30 minutes to enter this Market.

The portions are regular sized so come with friends to share multiple dishes between everyone.

Word is that there will be a Time Out event pass that will allow you to pay one fee, like a Time Out Market brunch where you get a set number of dishes (to choose from any restaurants) or drinks for a set price.

Review of Time Out Market Dubai – Tips

Some of the restaurants, such as Mattar Farm have a 45 minute wait. A good hack to avoid waiting in line to order is to download the Time Out Market app on iOS or Android and you can place your order directly on the app. Make sure you have push notifications enabled to let you know when your order is ready for collection as you will not get a physical buzzer this way.

Come at off peak hours to avoid the queues as you can stay as long as you like once you are inside. There is a gorgeous outdoor terrace balcony with views over Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain shows.

This Japanese outpost in Dubai has proven a great success. The bakery items at Yamanote are delicious and creative and make for amazing gifts. The cheese croissants are amazing!

A special tip is that both this mall location and their Jumeirah location, 1 hour before closing will offer special bundle deals which equate to more than 50% discount. The pastries do not last till the next day so they at the end of the day they offer a huge promotion to clear all the stock. Which makes for an excellent gift as they are wrapped in a large gifting box or enjoyed at home with family or if you are feeling cheeky alone!

Yamanote Cafe Review

The concept is self service, you take a tray and then select all the pastries you want. Once you finish choosing bring the tray to the counter for the staff to ring you up and package for you.

The soft serve ice cream at Yamanote Cafe is also excellent and a hidden treat. There are plenty of delicious ice cream options at the mall but this is on par with the soft serve ice cream at Eataly around the corner.

Update
The cafe has now been moved to a new location inside the mall, opposite the fountain entrance next to Five Guys Burger in the Dubai Mall. The new location is more visible and centrally located. There are still all the same Japanese pastries with many special snacks.
